Apartment complex battling bed bugs
Residents living in an apartment complex in Shillington, Berks County, are feeling the itch of bed bugs. They claim not enough is being done to get rid of the blood-sucking insects.
Eleanor Listrani, 83, has called Sencit Towne House apartments her home for the past nine years. For a month now, Listrani said she has been living with relatives after she found bed bugs in her apartment.
&In my bed and they said in my sofa and that&s where I sit. There&s so many people that have them that aren&t even telling,& said Listrani.
Listrani said her children decided to step in and talk with her landlord to see what was being done to treat the problem. Sencit&s management company, Housing Development Corporation MidAtlantic, told residents that they are monitoring the problem.
&We&ve been hearing stories about this from my mother&s friends and everybody and I said, you know, what you&re doing apparently is not working,& said Leah Hoffa, Eleanor Listrani&s daughter.
&I have marks on my arm. I thought they were mosquito bites and then someone told me, no they are not mosquito bites,& said Rose Manwiller, a resident.
Sencit&s managers would not talk with 69 News, but in a statement they said: &The building is currently being treated twice a week through the professional assistance of Western Pest Services with the last treatment occurring on Friday, August 24. Residents have also been educated on techniques to help prevent the spread of bed bugs into their homes.&
Residents like Rose Manwiller said that they have taken matters into their own hands, spraying 91 percent alcohol around their apartment to keep the bed bugs away.
&That&s what I do almost every night, spray all around my bed, around the walls, around my sofa,& said Manwiller.
